Rented the MAD2 for a 2 week solo trip around the South Island. Couldn't have been more impressed. Plenty of space, amenities and luxury. The check in process was seamless. I was able to get on the road within 30 minutes of arriving at the facility. There are so many extras on the vehicle that come in handy every day of your trip. I won't even consider another rental company on my next trip to NZ.

This is my 2nd times renting Mad1 to travelling around New Zealand. 1st time with Auckland branch and 2nd time with Christchurch. I am in love with it. Thank you MAD for giving me such an unforgettable and amazing 12-day solo trip and let me feel safe while travelling around NZ. The condition of the car is so good that I just need to focus on driving and don't need to worry about anything. I didn't pull over and check engine during my trip. MAD 1 took me to where I wanted to go and let me tick what I want to do in my bucket list. I definitely would come back and this time I definitely will rent MAD 2 which I didn't get luck to rent last time. P. S Somehow I feel like Mad got a perfect fit with every attractiona when I took every photo. I still want to thank you Dale for being patient and helpful after I made a stupid mistake when I returned the car.
We had a fantastic experience using Mad Campers. They were very accommodating to our needs. Any changes that we needed to make due to the ongoing pandemic were unproblematic. The camper was clean, tidy, warm and comfortable and it took us where we wanted to go. We had no problems with our camper at all, it ran well and handled the hills of Southland, Otago and Canterbury no problem. We traveled the length and breadth of the South Island in just over a week. Thank you very much and we hope to see you guys again. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
We rented a Mad2 out of Auckland for 11 days and had a blast. The van ran fine (don’t expect to speed up hills!!) and got us to everywhere we wanted to go. The bed is remarkably comfortable and the kitchen has everything we needed to cook. The fridge worked well but does take a lot of auxiliary battery so turning it off at night when it is cooler helps. There is not a ton of storage in the van but the rooftop box gave us all we needed. We also completed the Mad Camper Challenge and posted all 9 challenges. It saved us 5% on our rental - not enough to change our lifestyle but a nice touch and a lot of fun! The staff at the pickup and drop off were lovely and made sure we were comfortable with the van. There is a 24 hour contact line if you have any mechanical problems (we had none). Mad Campers is a great choice and we would highly recommend them!!
I visited the South Island of New Zealand in March with 3 other friends and had the BEST time ripped around in our Mad Camper vans for 3 weeks. They were the perfect adventure vehicle to get around NZ, as they were functional yet luxurious--I could probably live in that van if I could. The vans were equipped with a double bed, fridge, gas cooker, sink, cutlery, running water, compostable toilet, hidden lock box, rooftop box.. I could go on and on--they had absolutely everything we needed for the road! If you're heading to New Zealand anytime in the future, I 110% recommend getting a Mad Campers van for your next road trip. :)
We would highly recommend MadCampers vans to anyone who wants to go the camper van route while visiting New Zealand. Both the employees and the van went above and beyond our expectations, and I have to say I am a hard one to please! We were supplied all the information we needed before arriving in NZ; including some free downloadable apps to find free or paid campsites. They promptly picked us up at the airport and dropped us off in time to catch our flight out (only took about 20 minutes from the time we pull into the drop off location) They also worked quickly to fix a loose wire that was causing electrical issues. You find out the true character of a company when the unexpected happened, and we couldn't have been more pleased with the way things were handled to correct the problem. In addition to fabulous employees, their van was hands-down the best on the road! It had everything we needed to stay at the free, self-contained campsites, which saved us a lot of money. The van was easy to use, had ample storage for all our gear for a two week trip, and we got some jealous looks from other campers and passersby when they saw our amazing cooking stove and bed set up. Other things we really loved about the van: the mini fridge, running water, extra battery to run the electrical when engine isn't running, and 4 wheel drive. We also had tons of fun doing the Mad Challenge scavenger hunt while we drove the nearly 3000km around the south island. MadCampers made our trip an awesome one! This is how a company should be run! Note: They have a South Island, Christchurch pickup/drop off location and a North Island Auckland location.
I rented a mad2 for 5 weeks of solo travel. It was perfect for me, it's small, but not too small, gas mileage is descent compared to larger vehicles. It came with everything I needed, blanket, sheets, pillows, fully stocked kitchenette, the refrigerator is of great size for a camper. It comes with a portable toilet, but flush toilets in NZ are plentiful and I never had to to use. The value of the rental is good compared to what's out there. It also saves you the hassle of buying and selling a camper which takes away from your adventure and time on the road. The customer service was good, and when I did something or had a question, it was always taken care of and quickly. "It's not a rocket ship", I kept it around 80km most of the time, and max 100-110km on straight road. Which is good for safety, because you need to be a defensive driver in NZ. It does take a few minutes to make and unmake the bed properly, but that's ok, because it's that way to maximize space for your journey. The storage unit on the roof is a huge help for extra space, not many campers have this...it's great for keeping your larger camping equipment, luggage, ruck sacks and bits and pieces that you'll only need here and there. The 2nd battery unit is great and lasts a long time...it never died on me, but I speculated it would of lasted me a full 3 days with no charge. It powers the refrigerator, blue tooth / radio, water pump and LED house lights. It powering the radio is a bit plus, because you could listen to music with the engine off and at all times. I did a lot of research for my 5 week trip on the road in New Zealand. I felt confident with this rental, and I was very happy with my decision, and would suggest it to anyone on the road for a short or long amount of time.
LOVED my MAD1-Solo Traveller van! It was the prefect size for just me and it had everything I needed for my 2 week road trip. No car issues, easy to drive and navigate, and easy to park. One of my favorite features is the bluebooth audio. That kept me pretty sane during the long drives. I believe Mad Campers is the only company offering solo campervans so reserve early!
