The Kuaka / Godwits The sculpture welcomes people entering the Brighton peninsuala, the wetlands and estuary as a place where visitors can observe a wide range of bird species, enjoy the coastal walkways and take in the magnificent scenery. The sculpture raises awareness of the kuaka and the importance of the estuary as an feeding ground for both it and many other bird species. In this sense, it will play an educational role for both younger and older members of the community. In October 2018, in large part due to its significance for the bar-tailed godwit/kuaka, the Avon Estuary received international recognition when it was added to an exclusive list of wetlands making up the East Asian AustralasianFlyway (EAAF) network.
