The Christchurch Foundation offers corporate and individual donors a city-wide vehicle that will make it easier to contribute to and support a wide range of activities and projects that will provide betterment for Christchurch. Community (City) Foundations are relatively common-place around the world and many other regions in New Zealand have recognised the need for a “place-based” charitable organisation to enable donors to give directly to their city or region. There are approximately 14 community foundations throughout New Zealand. One of the most successful of these is the Acorn Foundation in Tauranga. The Christchurch Foundation actively collects, manages and distributes funds for community projects, charities, causes and not-for-profits (both large and small) in delivering the important work that they provide. Over time a wide range of giving programmes will be available to enable contribution to the long-term good of communities, such as bequests, endowments, diaspora or expat giving and corporate partner programmes. Donors’ contributions can be ‘ tagged’ to a sector (e.g. recreation and sport community projects), community within the geographic area (e.g. Opawa) or to a range of charities. Contributions could also be ‘ untagged’ and spent at the discretion of the Foundation Trustees under a developed set of policies. The Foundation will always ensure donor wishes are met.
