We did the self drive option for day visitors. We visited in January so the vegetation is green and profuse which makes it harder to see the game but you do see lots of new babies which is wonderful. I would suggest going in a car that has good ground clearance because all the roads are gravel and a lot of the roads have grass in the middle of the track. It is wonderful to have such a lovely game park which is so affordable to visit and so close to Johannesburg! Buy the map which only costs R30 because you can then figure out how the navigate the park. Once you understand the new map it is useful to know where each road option takes you. The driving is relaxing and beautiful and the sounds and smells of the African wilds are beautiful.

We did the self drive and we did not get to see any of the big five after six hours of driving. It was nice to spend the day out though. Maybe next time we will consider the guided tour. There are a number of restaurants inside the park to choose from so there is no need to worry about packing food for the day which is very convenient.

Stunning reserve, very well maintained. Unfortunately in 3 days of self drive, we had very little game sightings. Bird life was great.

So many places to stay within Dinokeng, but the perfect bush getaway for a weekend or long weekend. You can also do game drives and experience the Big 5 very close to PTA and Joburg.

Beautiful park just one hours drive from Johannesburg. We went for a self-drive which we really enjoyed. There are so many different tracks, and some of them are for 4x4s only, which is quite fun. The main tracks are dirt and I would not recommend them for standard sedans (despite what their recommendation to the contrary). The nature is well preserved but we were slightly disappointed by the number of big-five game.

Dinokeng Resort is a great camping site especially for families. They have shade and seating next to the pool and bar area, heated pools, large cold pool and water slides. The resort management is organised and helpful. The game drives in the reserve were the highlight of our week.

So we are on holiday in the Dinokeng Resort. Today we went to the Dinokeng Nature Reserve to see the big 5. We did the self drive route. After 6 hours in the heat we returned to the resort. There we read at one of the swimming pool notices that the Big 5 can only be seen when you take a guided tour. Does this mean that the big 5 is kept somewhere where the self drive guests can't get? Really disappointed as we paid R540 for 2 adults, 2 kids and a map. Oh and the R250 for the conservation fee. Won't recommend it for anyone.
