This major tourist attraction between Pingyao and Taiyuan was featured in the movie Raise the Red Lantern and a Chinese TV series. It was the housing compound of the scholarly merchant Mr Qiao and his extended family. Now the state owns it and turned it into a tourist joint. The compound is very nice. You get a good glimpse of how the rich lived. There are exhibits featuring daily life of the 19th century. The place is very crowded and parts of it becomes very commercialized.

Actually, I didn’t know about this place or family in the history. They are a successful businessman dated back to Qing dynasty. He is a trader for tea, beancurb and many others..this place becomes famous when a movie shot by Zhang Yi Mou director received a award in Cannes film festival for the movies red red lantern .. well decorated with red lantern everywhere. Big compound with historic architectural design of the mansion! Worth a visit if you do on way from Tai Yuan to Pingyao.
Must visit tourist attraction here. Spend 2 hours to finish half only. No toilet inside. Need to walk from coach parking bay. Bring umbrella if raining, no shelter.
The Qiao Family Compound (喬家大院), also known as Qiao Grand Courtyard, was the residential compound of the well-known 18th century financier Qiao Zhiyong (喬致庸) during the reign of the Qing Dynasty Emperor Qianlong (清朝乾隆皇帝). The estate covers 9,000 square meters and has 313 rooms within 6 courtyards. This is now a museum and it was where main location of the movie "Raise the Red Lantern (大紅燈籠高高掛)" by famous director Zhang Yimou (張藝謀導演) was filmed. The 2006 Chinese historical TV drama series "Qiao's Grand Courtyard (喬家大院)" was filmed here as well.

There was definitely a rich people feel to this spot, would recommend for romantic excursions with either or any gender. The ice cream is well-priced if you go to the lady with the rolling stones hat
Historical courtyard of Qiao family, sort of a history museum on family's wealth, lifestyle and livings. Empress Dowager gifts to the family and many historical items are there
Interesting complex. Only complaint is that it's too massive and gets boring after a while. The long row of stalls and hawkers at the end is annoying!
