宗氏の居城。 宗統家が死守していたが天正14年（1586年）に島津氏に敗れる。 島津氏は更に北上して岩屋城や立花山城を目指した。 羽柴秀吉の九州平定後、宗氏は田代の領有を羽柴秀吉に認められ、江戸時代においても田代は宗氏の飛び地となった。
