Creepy militaristic Jesus staue. Why so savage?

A visit to this church is an important part of the Camino to Compostela and the lady who runs the info table is superbly helpful. Beautiful pictures and statues of St. James including the Stone! There's daily Mass at 20.00.
Beautiful and curious piece of art.
The original Church was built by Bishop Teofomiro in the 9th Century then rebuilt in1133 by Archbishop Xelmírez. Current building is 19th century reconstruction. It's right next to the Camino de Santiago ( Saint James Way) on the Portuguese Way as the majority of pilgrims passing it started in Portugal. Inside under the altarpiece is the Pedron an ancient stone which the boat carrying the body of Saint James was moored up to or so some say as the stone is actually a Roman alter stone. Church is in centre of the town in a nice quiet spot next to the River Sar.
Beautiful church with the stone at the altar.
