WHY WE EXIST It’s our deep-seated belief that the world will be a better place when children, regardless of their social or economic background, gain the fundamental skills needed to set them on the path to becoming lifelong learners. At Changing Stories we believe every child deserves an opportunity to find and realise the talents and the potential - we call it greatness - that each of us is born with. Completing an education is the first step towards changing their own stories, the stories of their communities, and ultimately, the story of their nation. THE CHALLENGE More than half of all public school students in Nepal never finish school. The statistic is the result of a public school system, where only the strongest students thrive. Students who fall behind in the early grades never manage to catch back up, and eventually either drop out early or leave school unprepared. For students in Nepalese public schools, the vast majority of whom are from economically and socially disadvantaged families, dropping out of school often means little chance of escaping the poverty they were born into. We’re here to change that. AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH We enable left-behind government school students to catch up on foundational skills they missed out on in the early grades through cost-effective remedial education courses (RECs) teaching basic Nepali literacy and numeracy. Courses last for a total of 72 lessons and are lead by fellows, often youth, hired from the local community. Fellows receive pre-service training as well as continuous support and gain valuable work, teaching and leadership experience throughout their fellowship. WHO WE ARE Changing Stories is an educational for-impact organisation dedicated to helping struggling students in Nepal gain the foundational literacy and numeracy skills needed to succeed in school and in life.
