Rockbridge, United States

This is a bit harder to find but worth it. Use Airplane Rock Parking in your map search. It's between Big Pine Rd and 678 on Hockman Rd. It's about 40min hike one way from the parking. You will go downhill towards the orange gate. Keep following the service road. There's several cross sections for horse trails but stay on the wider road. You will pass gates on both sides of the road and eventually see outhouse on your left. Keep going past it and find the trail map. Walk downhill on the right side of the map and you'll end up to this beautiful cliff. It's steep and deep!

If it wasn't for a map on my phone, I would have never found it. Poor trail markings and you'll eventually end up running into a road and standing there confused like I was. Load a map prior to going as there is no phone service if on AT&T. If you want cliff views, hike the Rim Trail at Conkles Hollow, beautiful views and the Gorge Trail is amazing, especially towards the end when it turns to dirt.
Looking for a bit of peace and quiet in the ever too busy Hocking Hills, Airplane Rock delivers. Most folks seem to find this ok but it is easy to get off track. You park on either side of the small bridge just up from the Conkles Hollow entrance on Big Pine Road. You will see orange steel beams in the ground to designate the trail head. Start hiking back but do NOT follow the orange trail markers (Leading across a stream) as these are for horse trails that will lead you astray. The trail leads straight back and then takes a 90 degree turn to your right and heads up a small hill. This again takes another 90 degree left turn and follows up a continual incline towards the top to the hill. Just before the top, the trail turns left as it begins to straighten out and soon you will be near a set of steps on your right that lead up to a horse corral. Directly across from the stairs you find a split rail fence in dilapidated shape. Go through this fence and in 200 feet you will be standing on Airplane Rock. We hiked into the area at the bottom of Airplane Rock and , looking up, it's an amazing view and leaves one to wonder how this formation ever came about. Enjoy!
It took two attempts to get here. Google maps accurately got us to the parking area both times. We were on the right track both times, but quit too soon. As someone else posted.... go past the orange \do not block\ gate where you park. When you get to the bottom of the first big hill, stay right on the bigger path. When you get to the point that there are 3 paths, take the large one around to the left. That spot was wet both times we were there. Then go... and go... and go. We hike often and it took us almost 40 minutes. You will see an outhouse on the left and then you'll come to a broken fence on the right. Take the path down to an amazing view! The fence is not marked. I find it odd that the road and parking lot were marked but nothing else after that. If you're able to hike a pretty tough (lots of up and down hills) path, this one is with the trek.
Beautiful view. The drop looks like 100ft straight down, so be careful. Stay on the dirt/gravel road until you reach the split rail fences. There is also a little trail map there (which conveniently doesn't show where to go). Above are picnic tables and horse tie-ups. The rock is actually down from the road through the little fence, you can't see it from the road.
