We loved stopping here. It’s a great place to let the kids stretch their legs and climb the rock. It was super fun and easy.

!! AMAZING natural site with a great & important visible & tangible part of American history that can rarely be as clearly observed & experienced by all. Highly recommend to all! The only negative I would mention is: worst placement/orientation of main welcome/introductory sign that I've ever seen at a historic site(only with regards to photography/viewing). If you want to capture both the sign & Independence Rock in a well-framed photo, the sign becomes difficult/impossible to see, whereas when the sign is clearly visible and well-framed in a photo, it obstructs the view of Independence Rock itself. All it would take would be to angle the main sign more and/or a second copy of the sign could even be folded & doubled up on the other side of it with a better angled orientation, or sign could even be elevated much higher above on a type of giant entryway that would also nicely frame Independence Rock below it. Will fixing its placement ever be considered?

One of the highlights of my trip following the Oregon Calif Trail from Kanesville to Donner Pass. My ancestors traveled this trail and it is one of the most oft mentioned sites in trail diaries. There are still trail ruts and many names carved or written with grease visible. Being able to touch a name written in 1849 was exciting, as it is possible my ancestors were present at the original event. They may have camped in the area adjacent to the rock by the Sweetwater, as many immigrants did. If you are a Oregon Calif Trail history buff this is a must see. It is one place that virtually everyone who traversed the trail would have passed, and likely spent at least a few hours.

Stopped here by chance while on the road. Nice little gem in the middle of nowhere. Remember playing the video game as a child, life is such a wonderful circle!

Great place to stop and stretch your legs by hiking up Independence Rock. Location is a historical landmark to the Oregon Trail and has a convenient parking lot near trail access with restrooms.

5-12-20 Nice clean rest stop with a trail that leads to the rock. You can walk around the rock or go up to the top. We spent over an hour exploring the area. Plenty of great photo ops! Rabbits, birds and even an occasional Pronghorn! We saw a bald eagle flying overhead! Also saw a few snakes!

This was such a cool place to go. There are pioneer names carved at the top of the rock, and running my fingers over those and reading the names almost felt like I was a part of the history that took place there. Loved climbing to the top of this rock.

I stopped here on my way out to California from Virginia. It was a very peaceful spot to stretch my legs and walk around. The history behind this rock is also a lot more interesting and powerful than I thought it would be.
