Habitat for Humanity, Egypt (HFHE) is an NGO, registered with the Egyptian Ministry of Social Solidarity since 2003. HFHE started in 1989 working with the garbage collectors to provide decent and affordable housing. Over the last twenty years HFH Egypt has provided for the construction or major renovation of more than 15,838 houses. As a result, over 95,028 people who could not otherwise have afforded even basic improvements to their housing are now living in decent and affordable homes. HFH Egypt targets those people who are living at, or below, the poverty line and would not otherwise be able to acquire a loan to improve their housing. Loans are given free of interest and target those in the most need, including women and those with disabilities. With the goal of sustainability in mind, HFH Egypt works closely with partner organisations, already working in the community, to administer the housing loans and work directly with marginalised families.
