On the last Thursday of each month, my friend Emeka throws an open mic festival. This festival is very special because it allows artists who’ve been swept under the rug to express their beauty and craft. I am one of those artists. Emeka is a humble store owner, who owns an African culture shop called “Rhythms of the Village” in Altadena, California. No artist is overlooked here. I’ve seen performances ranging from bagpipes to an Alice in Wonderland reenactment. Whatever one wants to express is acceptable at this event. This shop reminds people of their roots and culture. You do not have to be African to be a part of the tribe. Everyone is welcome. The whole point of the festival is to unite all the tribes. It also reminds the community that we are all connected as one. Everyone has a part in the festival such as bringing food, jewelry, music, etc. Cultural storytelling, drumming, dancing are just some of the activities here. When Emeka throws a day-long festival, I bring my full sound set to the event free of charge. My sound system is all hard-earned through working as a freelance disc jockey. I worked hard for each speaker that I have. Emeka has so many underrated artists who have so much to communicate through their music. It’s mentally healing.

A hidden gem in Altadena owned by Emeka Doc Mob Chukwurah. In addition to a unique array of garments to select from, you can also purchase instruments, jewelry, handbags, etc. Monthly they giveaway fresh fruit and vegetables to the community. Annually, they host the Rhythms of the Village Spring Festival. Positive vibes and much !!!
