The most single horrible experience of my life. This experience changed my entire's family life experience. After reviewing her extensive records, this doctor assured us by phone our child could have corrective surgery, that he had extensive experience doing this, and she should do quite well. When we arrived in Ann Arbor, this doctor us that they could not replace or fix the valve but would surgically create a gravity fed heart, and she had a good chance. She was refused a heart transplant because she had Downs Syndrome. At this time she was a happy healthy looking smiling 4 year old, they told us it was her only chance at living long life, and that we should do it right away as she was doing very well at this time. After the surgery, her ejection fraction was never above a 7 or 8, and not able to sustain life, they said they would keep her on support to see if she became stronger and improved. A week later, she experienced DIC, acute kidney failure, and became totally unresponsive. She lingered like that for another week, then died. Firstly, what unconscionable nonsense it is, that Downs Syndrome children can not receive heart transplants. I believe an experimental surgery was conducted to try to give her a functioning heart, BUT I was never told how experimental this was in order to make a truly informed decision.
