Habaka, formerly known as Malagasy i- Hub, is a project born in 2011, initiated by independent Malagasy web actors (bloggers and independent workers in new technologies). It is born from the desire to share skills, to disseminate the technology and web culture and bring new life to the technology sector in Madagascar. In April 2013, Habaka was registered as non-profit organisation. Since its inception, Habaka has organized several events including BarCamp (co- organized with l'Atelier des Médias / RFI), conferences (Foire Internationale de Madagascar 2012, it-B 2012), tech competitions (Apps4Africa 2011), the first camp for mobile developers (Microsoft Devcamp 2013) and lately the first Startup Weekend in Madagascar. Habaka has also provided training and is currently involved in developing a local crowdsourcing platform for local veterinarians. Habaka remains convinced that Madagascar has its part to play in the field of new technologies, including providing solutions to the major challenges facing the country (reducing the digital divide, increasing productivity gains, improving the education, gender balance), but also to place the largest island on the world stage of technological innovation. Habaka aims to bring together and mobilize the Malagasy technology community, both residents and part of the diaspora (bloggers, tech, etc.) around different activities. Habaka is a member of Afrilabs network.
