I saw a nice vase here that I wanted to buy. As soon as I tried to look at it, the salesman came over and picked it up. That’s understandable with a 200 euro piece of glass that he may be worried about being broken. Before I could even tell him that I wanted to buy it, however, the man put it back on the shelf and started fussing at my ten-year- old son who was standing three feet away by the air conditioner. He spouted off several angry sentences in French and was pointing. I think he was saying that my son was too close to the air conditioner, but it was obvious that he wasn’t concerned about my son’s safety. He was worried about the machine. It was 90F and humid so my son was standing right in front of the air, but he wasn’t doing anything to it. Anyway, the glass was pretty, but the man wasn’t concerned with selling it to us. My son is well behaved with good manners and always wants to please everyone. He was on the verge of tears when we left. I don’t know if they dislike English speakers or children or what, but I wouldn’t want to give them my business after the way we were treated.
We did not actually buy anything, but watching the glass making and feeling the heat from the furnace as they worked the glass was fascinating.
