According to wall inscriptions on the east wall and manuscripts written by historians Ghevond, Hovhannes Draskhanakerttsi, and Stepanos Asoghik, the church and adjoining building for residence (the palace) were commissioned by Prince Grigor Mamikonian and his wife Heghine/Heline between 661-682 AD. Architecturally it is one of the most important Armenian churches of the Middle Ages and also one of the largest.

This place is really amazing. Also, no tourist buses or coaches. We had this place to ourselves. Well worth the detour.

Fantastic Mysterious place
Huge and impressive! It was built in the seventh century by an Armenian prince Grigor Mamikonian. The church resembles the Ani cathedral. Though it has no dome, it is still beautiful. I remember there were many ravens on the roof... they were very annoying and depressive.
It's the 7th century Christian cathedral that was built during the rule of Armenian nobelman Grigor Mamikonyan .It was pagan temple before that. Непонятно, почему этот изумительный храм не включён в популярные туристические маршруты, он красив своими строгими линиями, фресками и даже галками на куполе
