Carbon Tanzania is a forest conservation company that sell forest carbon offsets to businesses and individuals wanting to address climate change by minimising their carbon impact. We are the leading provider of forest carbon offsets to the Tanzanian tourism industry. Climate change is the defining environmental and economic challenge of our time. The loss and degradation of forests account for approximately 17% of the global annual carbon emissions. Over the past decade, a growing consensus has emerged on the importance of conserving forests as a key strategy for reducing global carbon emissions. Central to this is the approach of creating market incentives, in the form of carbon offsets, that reward governments, landholders, and rural communities for protecting forests. This broad strategy is termed REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). Over the past five years, Carbon Tanzania has become the leading company in Tanzania to put the ideals of REDD into action. We do this by partnering with local communities to develop internationally-certified carbon offsets through forest conservation and by selling these offsets to both domestic and international markets. Since 2009, Carbon Tanzania has sold over 20,000 certified carbon offsets, generating more than US$50,000 per year for indigenous communities and protecting 30, 600 hectares of forest adjacent to some of Tanzania’s most important wildlife areas.
