Asahikawa, Japan

Good for kids
There is a free campground, with bathrooms, running water, and places to cook. When I was there in early May, it was empty except for a few college-aged Japanese having a fire. My 1 star deduction is because there are many foxes here that have become accustomed to people leaving food and trash behind. They are not afraid of humans. I had to chase two or three off with a stick, to ensure they would not bother me when I slept.

Great place if you love to immerse in nature. Foxes, birds, squirrels can be seen frequently in the park :) Remember to get your own equipment. Basic facilities
It's free! Turned up with a tent (bought at House Off on the same day) and set up in the campground without any issues. There are plenty of spaces to cook under cover and toilet facilities. It's roughly a 30 minute walk from Asahikawa station if you're like me and don't have a car.
Free camping right in the middle of the city! There is also an onsen just round the corner. Very popular park tho, people stay till after midnight in the car park and was also visited by groups of students in the middle of the night.
