I love this cider house in Astigarraga.

I had possibly the best meal of my life at Oialume Zar. It's really that simple. The chorizo, the cod omelette, the fried omelette, the steak, the cheese with walnuts and quince paste, the martintxos... every single one of the (many) courses was simply perfect. This is an authentic Basque cider house, with no intention of attracting tourists. Do not expect to be having long, meaningless conversations with the waiters. Do not expect to be shown the menu or to be shown to the cider barrels (kupelas) or to be asked how you would like your steak. The meat is grilled until very rare, as it should be. The waiters serve you and go back straight away to serve other customers The kupelas are there, you can open them and get as much cider as you want at any time. And you know what? That's brilliant. I like my meat rare, especially when it's the best steak I've had in my life.
Cider tasting and a fixed menu for 30 each. There were eight vats of cider to sample. The menu is typical Basque fare including cod and grilled steaks. The cider was good, but the food and service were excellent. Our server could tell that we were new to cider houses and went to a lot of extra effort to explain things to us. Really nice people.

Chuletón de buen tamaño y carne muy sabrosa, el bacalao con pimientos estaba en su punto. La sidra de las cubas de metal estaba dulce para mi gusto, las de las barricas de madera era mejor. Si he de ponerle una pega la tortilla de bacalao quizás un poco excasa para 4 personas. Se puede repetir sin duda.
