Toby is a dog kept by Sir Rutherford Alcock KCB, a Diplomat of British Empire . Toby died of burn in 1860. The burn was caused by geyser here. Sir Rutherford Alcock declared war together with USA, Netherland, French Empire against Choshu Domain in 1864. He successfully punished "idolatrous heathen" with overwhelming naval force.

初代駐日英国公使サー・ラザフォード・オールコックの熱海訪問の記念碑と愛犬トビーの墓です。 熱海訪問の際に愛犬トビーが間欠泉で大火傷を負って死んでしまったそうです。それを日本人が手厚く葬ってくれたことにラザフォードが感動し、当時のイギリスの対日感情が新日に傾くきっかけになったそうです。 興味深い話だと思いました。
