The abbey is a Cistercian monastery in Aubel, Berwinne valley since 1216. The Monks from Lanaken settled at the border. This church is the 5th version if you include the enlargements. There's also a brewery with very good beer, and this is the oldest monk-beer. The Beer is still brewed at the monastery, but bottled elsewhere. You can subscribe for a guided tour of the brewery and of the monastery and ther are both worth it. Very good guide. There's also a nice park well maintenanced. Ideal for a picknick, but please keep it clean. It is clean and beautiful. At the shop you can buy the beer and liquor from this brewery at good prices. You better take every taste :-) .

Beautiful Belgian Abbey, making great beer and great food. A bit hard to find as it is in the middle of nowhere, but that also adds to it's exclusive feeling. It is possible to visit both the Abbey and the brewery. Everything is explained in English and the employees are very friendly. The restaurant is good m, friendly and serves (of course) the Abbey's beers. Grab your tray, order your food, pay and go sit down, the waiter will bring your food. Parking is easy and the overall feeling of the place is peaceful (as one would expect), enhanced by the beautiful nature surrounding it. Definitely worth the trip.
Great brewery & beers in an outstanding setting. Perfect for a road trip (although limited drinking if you are the driver).
Heaven sent!
Worst brewery tour ever! I have seen many breweries so far but this was definitively not worth the 7 euros and the long drive we had. It was one of the Saturday tours in French for individuals. Around 70 people were taking the tour - all waiting in the courtyard not knowing where to go and who would gonna be the guide. It looked like as they didn't expect so many people so they split the group into a Dutch and a French speaking group. Our (French) group first went into the storage tank part of the brewery where the guide explained the whole brewing process. How would people understand how beer is made when only standing in a storage tank room? All almost 50 people were squeezed into this room. It took like 20 minutes when we were lead to a bottle sorting machine outside the building. And then we were lead to the tasting room. Seriously? We didn't even get to see the brewhouse - the heart of a brewery. The beer is alright though, but the whole tour was just disappointing. Although the abbey looks quite nice.
