If you own an older European car, there's a good chance you might get to know your mechanic better than you'd like to. Luckily if it's Aaron and the guys at Wynyard Street Motors, that works out fine. Expert service, super helpful to deal with, and excellent communicators - yep, you read that right - the team here are the right ones to get in your corner. Five stars from me. And maybe a Japanese car next time (yeah, right) :-)

Anyone that follows my local reviews know that I own a Classic that I treat like a spoiled child; what ever it wants and needs, it gets. Today I was booked in at Wynyard Motors Devonport for rotation, balance and alignment on my 1994 FD3. Aaron (new owner taking over from longtime owner Mark Van Strieland) has not skipped a beat for providing the quality and professional service Mark had long maintained and was known for. This vehicle is looked aftermechanically by Dave Martin and Vaughn of Dave Martin Motors in Wynyard street but there are speciality things that Dave can not do; hence the visit to Wynyard Motors. I recieved a comprehensive run down of the work done plus advice on work required for the old boys future (the car not me, I am nearly dead anyway)...........this level of professionalism has long ago left the building, so, I was pleasantly surprised. Not cheap, then again I don't want cheap it means someone does not care and just turns the jobs over. However, with what it costs to live in NZ these days it was extreme value for money. Rexy lives on to drive another day like he just left Hiroshima in 1994 all because of the attention to detail and the pride Wynyard has in its workmanship/craft.

Dreadful experience. Took my car for WOF and had a lot of unnecessary difficulties with this place. They failed my car, which is old and not unexpected. The bad part is they were dismissive and unhelpful about fixing it, so I went elsewhere to get the job done. Then they wouldn’t pass the work. The repair mechanic stood by his work and only after a third return to Wynyard St Motors and a supposed ‘auditor’ inspection did they pass the job that was done properly in the first place. The proprietor has zero people skills. He was incredibly rude, foul mouthed, arrogant, dishonest, lazy and unhelpful. I would never go back and recommend you look elsewhere for someone who wants your custom. Do yourself a favor, nothing could be worse.

If youve got money spare go here. This place is the perfect example of why its not the best idea to get a WOF check done at a mechanics garage. They failed the brakes because the brake pads were in their evaluation too low and needed replacing. I was advised by another mechanic I went too that the pads were getting low but were still easily within the passable range by WOF standards. When I challenged them about this they said it was a visual check and they looked to be too low. They later agreed with the other mechanic and passed them. The other reason for failing it was there was significant damage to the subframe underneath car. This was true but they advised me this was a big job to fix and would take a whole day to do (Presumably this is anywhere from 5 – 8 hours). They quoted me 125 per hour for labour and got a price for the required replacement part (which he claimed was difficult to find) of 500 plus shipping. I found the same part at the first 2 places I phoned for either 275 or 350. I then took my cheaper part to another place and had another mechanic do the ‘whole day' job in two and a half hours at 80 an hour. Making it under 500. Half the price of what this place was wanting to charge. Perhaps their locality grants them the ability to charge significantly higher prices than most other garages but I personally feel that they may be taking advantage of peoples lack of other options of where they could go in the area with limited other mechanics around. On the plus side they did adjust my headlight for free that was pointing too low so they could pass the WOF on the recheck.
