Just got from our second trip to Benchmark. Once again we had a wonderful time. The fishing was excellent and the hospitality from Darwin and staff was outstanding. We cooked breakfast in our cabin and had delicious suppers at the Lodge, just like family at the working ranch that it is. The weather was perfect, there were no ‘squitos or flies bothering us, the shade is plentiful and the sound of the wind in the trees was wonderful. We arrived on a beautiful morning in my little single engine plane, were picked up on the field, then delivered to the river to get started fishing. The South Fork Sun River is a treasure. We will be coming back, and plan to stay longer.

Our family has stayed here for years. I grew up staying here and so will my girls. Completely off the power and cellphone grid but has hot showers in the shower house. Doesn't get much better than this!
This is a long overdue review of Benchmark Wilderness Guest Ranch. Our family has visited the ranch three different times now and each time was a \best ever\ experience. Our hearts are full in that mountain setting on the edge of the Bob Marshall Wilderness. It is a place that is hard to leave. The Heckmans are down to earth and hospitable hosts and once you are settled into your cabin they step back and just let you unwind as you choose to. The cabins are rustic and spotlessly clean. The old beds are comfy and the bedding is fresh. There is always firewood. The cooking supplies are just enough. Some of the cabins have antique but still working propane stoves that are a treasure to cook on. An old propane mantled lamp will warmly light your cabin each night. An outdoor long handled pump brings you crystal clear and cold water to drink and cook with and wash up with. Anytime day or night, there is also the luxury of a hot shower and flushing toilets in a central area just a few steps from each cabin. You have never seen vistas and wilderness beauty like you will see high up here on the east slope of the Rocky Mountains. There are hiking trails absolutely everywhere up in this neck of the woods. Wood Lake is just a couple of miles down the road and I've never seen so many jumping and hungry trout. A cold mountain creek runs right through the ranch and is just hours of fun for the kids. We absolutely treasure this place. It is the very best \off the grid\ \get away from it all\ we have ever experienced. The most beautiful mountain country in all of Montana without a doubt.
Wilderness is freedom. It's nice to have a warm bed and great dinners, too though. Here you can have both. If you need time away from your cell phone, your computer, your emails, and other stimuli that overwhelm us this day and age, come here. This is a place with the power to recharge your soul, your spirit. As I relive my time here, I can a hear a dozen sounds, every one of them perfect in their natural state. Squirrels scolding, several birds singing, crickets chirp, the creek through camp, and the crackle of our fire. The air is vibrating with the perfect harmony that wilderness makes. No man made noises can be heard as we sit comfortably at our picnic table. We reflect upon a second day of incredible fishing, the challenges presented, and the many chubby cutthroats persuaded. Eventually, we take showers, as we'll be having dinner with Darwin and family. The facilities are awesome, rustic but with piping hot or ice cold water any time. They are perfect hosts, dinner is a social and jovial event with regaling, great food, fishing tips, and killer desserts. We establish that all the necessary amenities and comforts of a rustic ranch are in order. Other than dinner, we are at our leisure to appreciate the nature and serenity nearby, or hitch a ride to the trailheads of the mind blowing Bob Marshall Wilderness. We took full advantage of both. Please reach out to this place if a getaway to the hills will rejuvenate you. I feel certain it's added time on to my lifespan. I hope to come back every summer for the hospitality, fishing, and therapeutic solitude to be had here. Thanks Darwin and Fam, Ben Stirewalt
