I had to write this in response to another post about freelance (self-employed) working for Auscript. I work for Auscript and before them Gurneys, as well as other companies. I would not call myself a fast audio transcriber, probably around average, and I can earn quite a decent hourly rate, thank you, and far more than the ludicrous 5-6 per hour mentioned in another post. I am also amazed that Auscript actually pays a freelancer to practise. I had to practise at my own expense – imagine paying your decorator to practise how to hang wallpaper! Well done Auscript, and thank you for being one of the more caring and generous transcription companies to work for. You seem to have had a lucky escape!

I undertook some freelance work for Auscript recently. The tests to pass and criteria to fulfil are fairly arduous and the training they expect you to complete (mainly for free) is vast. Whilst I found the staff very helpful and friendly, I would like to warn other potential freelancers to be very cautious about the rates of pay. The practice transcriptions invariably take longer than Auscript advise and the pay rate worked out at around 5.00-6.00 per hour! Less than the statutory minimum wage. When I approached them about this, they became very defensive and refused to give me details of who to complain to about this appalling pay rate. It's not even as if the work itself is easy! There are so many style points to follow (with an extremely high pass rate expected too) that it is ludicrous for the pay to be so low. Even for freelance work. It saddens me that I have to write like this, but I felt duty bound to warn any future freelancers not to believe Auscript when they tell you that you can earn up to 30.00 an hour. The reality is that it will be far less.
I was quote 180.00 for a Judgment but the actual cost was 15.00, it was paid at public expense. An over estimate of 165.00. I wanted another Judgment and the estimate was 380.00, including written reasons, I could not afford this. They refused to recalculate the estimate and I didn't get my transcripts for my Appeal. I was told this week that the cost of the Judgment only is 30, and I could have paid that and had the Judgment for my Appeal. This company is not fit for this important job of providing serious court documents. They obstruct justice by pricing out litigants in person by forcing litigants to pay huge deposits up front. Choose another company and stop them trading. Update following Auscript reply:- Auscript were asked on 2 occasions for an estimate of Judgment of a few minutes only, they charged 180 knowing it would cost around 15.00. I have the emails to prove this. The Transcriptions had major details wrong, such as no name for Judge and the wrong Court name and address. They made sure they advertised their company on every page, this is also wrong. They changed the errors on the Transcripts then contacted me last week to state the first transcripts had to be used as the final legal documents even though the major facts were wrong - false details in Court documents. They have contacted the Court to tell the Court they are using the first transcripts with the wrong details on them. I demanded my money back they refused, I'm going to small claims Court for a refund and I am ordering the transcripts from a different company. I will not be using the Auscript Transcriptions for my case.
well i thought they were gr8.
I have been dealing with Auscript on professional basis for a few years and always found them experts in their field
