Ankokuji Temple is located in the north part of Ayabe City. The temple was established in mid 14th century by the very first Shogun of Muromachi Period ( Ashikaga Takauji ). The temple is the birth place of Ashikaga Takauji. In its precincts there is a well used for giving delivery to Takauji and graves and monuments of his mother are also enshrined in this place. The place is filled with Japanese maples and visited by many tourists during the season when leaves turn color in autumn ( annual Momiji festival is held in mid-november ).There is a statue of Shaka sanzon as well as various type of historical assets preserved in its main hall. This temple is designated as a very important cultural asset in Ayabe city. The birth place ( the well where the delivery was practiced ) is outside the temple located just a minute walk away down the road. According to the history this area was once called Uesugino-sho in which Kiyoko who is the mother of Takauji came back to her hometown in Tamba destrict for giving birth to Takauji. Later on she built a villa in front of Ankokuji Temple. To get access to this area take JR Line to Ayabe city and exchange the bus to Kurotani Line to Ankokuji Bus stop. The closest station is Umesako by JR Line. ( Trans-word : TGM Kyoto Guide )

A Lovely place to visit during the fall color change. Historically important site.
