This was an amazing, old tree deep in the forest above Komyoji Temple. It is quite easy to get to because there is good signage throughout the woods. We even wandered off the trail and found a sign in the woods that guided you back to the trail (must happen to a lot of people to warrant a sign). The tree is about 2km from Komyoji Temple and a really pleasant walk through a primeval forest with lots of really ancient-looking trees. The Great Japanese Horse Chestnut Tree itself was enormous. The trunk of the tree is cleaved open, creating a large cavity. The branches look quite healthy and there is moss growing on a lot of the tree.
