Recovering from internal civil war (1975-1990), and torn apart by the Arab-Israeli conflict (1948-2006), Lebanon was witnessing a continuous state of crisis, a state of relative peace interrupted every now and then by harsh conflicts. In 1996, a group of activists, trying to leave a positive impact on their community, established SAWA1. The aspiring name meaning “Together” reflects the power of union as a problem solving tool. Rapidly after establishment, SAWA effectively captured the attention of the society; volunteers started to gather and lobby at SAWA’s facility promoting dialogues and discussions, forging the dreams into actionable plans and the journey began. The first step in the journey was a program entitled “Together, we build peace” targeting the children in the Bekaa valley -the most marginalized governorate in Lebanon. The program aims to alleviate the burden of conflicts on childhood. Rapidly thereafter, SAWA begin to address the pertinacious problems the community faces, most notably gender inequality, employment inequality, children rights, accessibility to education and health care, & environmental protection. Equality, solidarism with the vulnerable, and justice are the core values that shape the culture of the young organization residing on three main pillars. The first targets youth generation through a comprehensive program aiming at inclusion in political decision making, peace building/ conflict resolution, right to education, vocational training amid others. The second pillar targets women under different initiatives to protect, raise awareness on specific topics (Reproductive health, GBV etc.) and engage in political life. The third focuses on Children and covers education, child protection and family therapy.
