Known from the movie \Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis\, the somewhat austere belfry rises above the old town of Sint Winoksbergen (Fr. Bergues). Although the 13th century belfry has survived various renovations, restorations and rebuildings over the centuries, the German occupation in WWII ultimately becomes fatal to him. In 1944 they blow up the beautiful 47m high, yellow sandstone gothic tower, to prevent it from being used as an observation tower by the Allies. Since there is only a limited budget available, the result of the reconstruction of 1958-61 is a lot simpler and the belfry loses many of its characteristic features. Nevertheless, it is one of the most beautiful monuments in French Flanders and the carillon sounds every Monday morning during the market.
