The core mission of ICGS is to support a sense of individual and social responsibility amongst both students and society at large. This includes strengthening their overall competences to think, debate, and struggle in optimizing often tensed relationship between freedom and equality in both domestic and international politics. The courses ICGS offers are primarily aimed at undergraduate students majoring in social sciences, though other students are also welcome to apply. Postgraduate students interested in conducting research in the Balkans are encouraged to contact ICGS to explore possible modes of academic cooperation on a case by case basis. Professors and researchers interested in visiting positions should also feel encouraged to send inquiries and proposals. The ICGS’s operating philosophy rests on removing the borders between teaching, studying, academic research, and public policy relevant work experience. In this respect, courses offered will combine different problem-driven learning methods: internships, debates, simulations, guest lectures, site visits, and directed studies. While the physical and psychological safety of our staff and students is our absolute priority, intellectual and ideological safety is not. Limiting debates means limiting progress. Students will be encouraged to debate controversial ideas and arguments, rather than dismiss them outright. Furthermore, the ICGS aspires to capitalize on its geographic location at the European periphery to take perspectives of both small peripheral countries and global “core” powers. Lastly, ICGS will aspire to contribute to the public interest by publishing academic books, articles, and policy papers, as well as by organizing thematic panel discussions and consulting for governmental and non-governmental organizations.
