Established in 1937, Biratnagar Jute Mill was the country's first production plant. The government handed it over to Arihant Multi-fibre of Golchha Organisation in 2002. However, the company failed to run the factory properly due to political intervention and labour problems.

Jute mills in Nepal are widely popular. But the most popular Jute Mill is the Biratnagar Jute Mill. This widely well-known mill is also the oldest in the country. The jute mills were established in 1936, after the orders of Prime Minister Juddha Shamsher. Highlights: The major highlight of this mills is that it is the first registered company in the country. And therefore, it is also the inspiration for the industrial revolution and development of manufacturing companies across Nepal. Today, because of this company, jute mills’ industry is over 75 years old. That’s what makes it one of the most important industries in the country. The place has a power house, a turbine power house as well and is connected to major railway station in the area. It also has several playgrounds, where employees can enjoy and be more productive.

Biratnagar Jute Mill is the first industry of Nepal. It is famous for The Biratnagar Jute Mill Strike (Majdur Hartal) of March 1947 which was a labour strike in Biratnagar, Nepal, by workers and labourers of Biratnagar Jute Mill, Ltd. The strike was initially against the management regarding labor rights, but gradually turned into a nationwide anti-regime movement. The mill is in operation stage now.
