Really special atmosphere for this back to basics campsite. Very friendly wardens, beautiful views and excellent location for the Brough of Birsay. Didn't have a chemical disposal point though, but other facilities very good. Piping hot water in the showers, toilets very clean. Peaceful and relaxing spot, highly recommend.

Fine walk across the causeway at low tide gets you to the pictish settlement and a pleasant walk to the lighthouse takes about 20 minutes. Stunning views and plenty of sea birds.
If you want a site with shrubs, trees bushes etc dividing the pitches, then dont come to Birsay. This a good old just the basics site which give you a true taste of everything Orkney. An inland view of a loch, and a coastal view of the lighthouse and amazing rock formations, and the wind. !! If it dies down you suddenly think somethings missing because you just get used to it. The warden is very friendly and helpful, and the facilities are excellent even though they are in a portakabin. However please be aware they is no facility for chemical disposal. We did the 10 minute stroll to the nearest beach clambering over rocks that almost gave the Giants Causeway a good run for their money, and watching the seals come in close to the waters edge. At night the van was rocking in the gales (which the warden later told us was a light breeze !!!) I loved the wildness of the place, and chatting with other campers at the washing up kitchen or the water point. To experience the north west corner of Orkney mainland this is the place to come, but bear in mind there are no food shops close by, and remember theres no such thing as bad weather - just wrong clothes
Great site well run lovely helpful wardens would recommend to everyone
The facilities are good and surrounding countryside is glorious. However, compared to the Picaquoy Centre in Kirkwall which has even better facilities it is a tad expensive two nights for man and van in Picaquoy 27.80. One night at Birsay 20. Enough said.
