Hired a Hyundai Elantra for three days fron National Car Rental at th Campbell River airport. Budget couldn't do a 3 day. Liz was very helpful and the 3 day with full insurance was only 250. The Elantra only used 5.4 litres / 100km. Fantastic. Also the roads on Vancouver Island are great. Travelled from Nanaimo to Port Hardy, no problems.
