I am an overweight male with several serious medical issues, STEMI, CAD, SOSA, GERD, HTN, etc. I was experiencing stroke symptoms, severe headache, nausea, dizziness, blurred vision left eye, hearing loss left ear, vertigo, difficulty walking, etc. I DO NOT call 911 for myself unless I am unable to drive to UNC Hospitals. Within 5 minutes, fire engine arrived, another 3 minutes SORS ALS Ambulance arrived. My wife was greatly relieved to see me ask for transport, I usually just ignore illness, like many stubborn males, falsely assuming symptoms will magically subside or go away. BIG MISTAKE ! SORS personnel were extremely courteous, efficient, medically thorough while they performed a rapid assessment and transported me to the UNC ED. On the way, they made me as comfortable as possible, they called ahead to the ED to prepare for my arrival. I was trying hard NOT to throw up in their clean ambulance, their calming conversation helped me avoid that and they were driving gently, which I appreciated. SORS is a very VALUABLE community resource. We are fortunate in Chapel Hill and Carrboro to have such a professional group of volunteers backing up Orange County EMS, training hundreds of EMT volunteers, and many other important Public Safety responsibilities. I will continue to support SORS with my tax-deductible donations. I am very grateful for their kind assistance in my hour of need. Thanks to Chief Matthew Mauzy and his great staff of Volunteer EMT's. Stanley Ray Hoffman Southern Village Chapel Hill
