Surprisingly quiet trail network with variation from dry open coniferous forest through scattered deciduous pockets with meadow and floodplain with oxbow remnant. Varied low-lying riverine terrain, quite exceptional in the Kootenay region. Trails easy for all abilities, no difficult sections. You can do a 6km loop and add on extensions. Not a destination hike for most, just a pleasant diversion. However, if you are interested in birding this is a stand-out hotspot. Rarities seem to turn up on a regular (albeit infrequently, of course) basis: Barn Owl, Lucy's Warbler, Black Scoter and Great Egret come to mind over the past couple of years. Current species list is 238. Always a lot of action if you know where to look and what to look for. Apart from the odd aircraft, you would have no idea that Castlegar is just a couple of kilometres away.
