The theater itself doesn’t really rate 4 stars—it is old, with makeshift dressing rooms curtained off to the side of the audience, and the power seems to go out a lot. But the stars are for the atmosphere here on the grounds of the Spring Grove Hospital Center. It’s a mental health facility that is still mostly operational but with many historic and beautiful abandoned stone buildings, including one adjacent to the theater.

It's just a big hall - how could I rate it 5 stars?! The Heritage Players deserve each star, shining brightly. It's a quirky location, yes, and folding chairs don't seem the best for theatre, but none of that matters when the curtain goes up. This is talent. You'll find drama, music, heart, and fun. Worth every penny for admission. Small snacks available for donation on site; ample free parking. You won't regret this trip onto a Catonsville hospital campus, and you'll be dragging friends back for the next show.

I work across the street. It's a neat old building.

Be sure to ask Google Maps for Thomas-Rice Auditorium and not the street address or you'll never find it. Even so there were several false turns in the Google maps directions. The wheelchair ramp is always useless. Architectural historians will enjoy the dilapidated example of whatever it is. It functioned well enough for the purpose. Come early to find it. As for the Cafe across the street if asking for directions. Everybody knows where that is.

Old auditorium in a decommissioned State Hospital. Basic utilities being maintained, but don't expect anything fancy.
