Our son was diagnosed with ASD by a doctor and the school and we were desperate for help. We found CARD and went to the orientation. We were so happy that we finally found help. At our initial meeting with our first clinician we walked in and within 3 minutes she said he doesn't have autism and blew us off. Then a few months later our son was hospitalized and we were desperate again. Our clinician was out of town so we spoke to another clinician and she was very passionate and helpful at first. She met with us and made suggestions for his IEP. We had an IEP meeting with the school district and the school coming up and she really wanted to come. We were considering hiring an advocate but with her being there we didn't think we needed to. We were so happy that we finally had hope and someone who could speak intelligently about Autism and what our son needed at school. The day of the IEP she was a no show. We waited for her and then we called her office. She was with another client. We were devastated. We had 4 school representatives there and us. We were just parent with no education or ASD background. We were out numbered. Finally she called in and was silent for the entire meeting. She was so vocal and seemed so passionate about wanting to be in that meeting to speak up for our son, but she didn't speak for the entire meeting! She truly let us down. After this experience I spoke with other ASD parents and they had similar experiences with CARD. We desperately need more advocates in our community for the ASD kids and unfortunately they aren't there. I think if your child is high on the spectrum they might be more helpful, I'm not sure, but for the high functioning kiddos there just isn't a lot of help out there.
