Food is tasty. However service is greatly in need of improvement and restaurant decor is dated - these contribute to minus 1 star. Food price is on the pricey end. Food portion is normal, not huge.

Heard about the ever so famous 30 dollars chicken rice from family frens. Stayed in Mandarin orchard so we had breakfast here as well. Food was very good. Local foods are better than the American breakfast set. We ordered chicken rice for our in room dining. The set looked fantastic and tasted delicious. Restaurant is a fine dining ambience with local food. During checkout they gave us 50% discount.
Chicken rice was highly raved but really disappointed. The 5 set I got at Food Republic tasted equally if not better. While I liked the tender meat at Chatterbox. the sauce didn’t felt that magical or amazing. Especially for the price paid - 27 The soup tasted slightly MSG like (no indication on their menu it’s chicken soup or what, just salty soup with shredded cabbage and a really small round tofu). The rice was the utter disappointment. For an established restaurant priding itself on the chicken rice, they actually skimped on the quality of it. Broken rice grains probably meant a subpar quality of rice used. Also the rice felt uncooked in some areas. Please see comparison to the one I ate at FR today which costed 5, but came in whole fluffy grains. Presentation wise was on point. Moving on to the lobster laksa, we enjoyed that dish a lot. Couldn’t find the lobster body meat but ok. The gravy was really nice, noodles were Q. Would recommend this dish if you want to use your dining credits, not so sure about paying 40 for this since the lobster is quite small and you could probably get a much decent sized lobster elsewhere. Probably if you really want a good bowl of laksa this is the place to go. Service staff hits and misses everywhere but thoughtful service by a staff by the name Raymond.
Before visiting Chatterbox, I heard of their famous chicken rice and lobster laksa. I received 80 dining voucher from Mandarin Orchard for my recent staycation, and thus my hubby and I decided to dine here for dinner. We came here at 9:30pm on 23 Mar 2021 and were the only customers during our visit, hence the place is really quiet. The staff provided great service and made our dining experience enjoyable. They also constantly came over to refill drinking water for us. You must try the chicken rice and lobster laksa! Normally the chicken rice costs 28 and lobster laksa costs 38. It is expensive but really tastes very very good. The standard is there We also tried the salted egg chicken wings. I would recommend Chatterbox if you like to try quality local food in a comfortable environment.
Came for Singapore's most expensive chicken rice at a cool 27 (bef GST) per plate. Was underwhelming and surprisingly the rice was dry, seemed to be a mix of grains, and lacked that distinct chicken rice aroma that any hawker stall's will have. Considering it's a place that offers such a "premium" dish, the ambience certainly failed to match. With plain decor and generally noisy atmosphere, it resembled more of your shopping mall Kopitiam.
For my overnight stay at Mandarin Orchard, I had the opportunity to taste Chatterbox signature dishes for dinner. 1) Review of signature lobster laksa: The dish was far from expected. The lobster was so tiny for the hefty price paid and all the rave I saw prior to visiting the restaurant. Certainly wasn't worthwhile the money paid. Note that the pincers might look big but the flesh inside was very very little. 2) Review of signature chicken rice: Portion was big but both the rice and soup lacked fragrance. I think my Ah Ma (a.k.a grandma) cooks much nicer rice and soup than Chatterbox. My Thermomix Chicken Rice recipe also way surpasses that of this legendary dish. Tsk tsk... 3) Review of satay: Honestly, this is the best satay I have ever had. The paste was sumptuous, the serving of meat on every stick was generous, the marinade was exceedingly well done. We loved the rice and the garnishes that came with the satay. Should I return for the food here, it would most likely be the satay. Service: Clean cutlery, warm water was served, good attention by the staff.
Finally I tried the most expensive (and legendary) chicken rice in Singapore. It was ok but nothing is really outstanding. The chili and ginger paste are boring with no character. This is understandable because they need to serve these to a lot of tourists. Overall it is a fair plate of chicken rice.
The chicken rice was average at best. The chicken was good and a good portion but the rice was not good (dry and not fragrant). Also, considering you’re sitting down for Singapore’s most expensive chicken rice you would expect the restaurant ambiance to match but instead it feels like your eating in the hotel’s staff cafeteria. It used to be a special experience coming to Chatterbox where you were treated to great food, great service in a fancy restaurant setting. That experience is long gone and the only thing that remains is an over priced menu.
