Ss. Peter and Paul Church prior to becoming an independent parish in 1951, had a small chapel in the same place where the present church stands and this was a substation to St. Joseph’s church , Briand square. Rev. Fr. Peter Briand , a great missionary priest , a man of magananimous heart, was a very infulential priest and was also a member in the municipal council. Through his efforts a vast vacant land was made available for the church and many of the poor parishioners were given the land free of cost. In memory of his great magnanimous act. The place itself was named after him (PETER) in Tamil is RAYAPURAM. After the demise of Fr. Peter Briand on 21/2/1940, under Fr. W.M. Texeria, the small chapel continued to function as a substation to St. Joseph’s church .
