Charlies Creek Rd
N/A
Good for kids
This is the closest place to park to begin your AT hike at the NC south border. You must have 4-wheel drive however as it’s a dirt road that is often used by off roaders and not maintained. We parked here overnight once with no issues.

In order to reach the AP crossing we had to do it by foot. We tried to access it by car, but it is impossible without a four wheeler. The first attempt was on the west side and we had to go back. The second attempt was on the east side, on Tate's Campground, by crossing Charlie's creek on the ford. Since it was impossible by car we hiked three miles to the AP crossing. The jeep road is fine, the Charlie's creek crosses the road twice making the hike fun. So if you want to hike the AP to the NC border, just park on the side of Tate's Campground and hike a total of 14 miles round trip.
Love this place.
The road is too rough to drive to the A.T. crossing, unless you have FOUR WHEEL DRIVE. I tried in a car and was stopped, spinning a wheel and unable to move forward on a steep and rough rocky stretch. (I was able to back down hill OK and got out). You've been warned !!!
4x4 required
Short distance from paved road (1mile) but recommend 4wd like Jeep or pickup some parts very Rocky and rutted
On the AT.
