Popular Vancouver landscape painter Leanne Christie moved to the Canadian West Coast in September 2008. Christie trained under Noel Hodnett and Robert Brooks at the influential Rhodes University art school in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and graduated with her degree in painting at the end of 1996. The influence of the Grahamstown group on Christie’s work is evident in the importance she places on developing her visual language through her charcoal drawing and the belief that painting is not creating a final piece, but is a state of mind set on a skillful foundation. Christie explains her motivation to paint as a compulsion to discover the secrets. Christie epitomizes the independent spirit of the contemporary artist in that she values the intellegence of her collectors and knows that they prefer and can differentiate, quality and artistery over misleading marketing hype. Christie has positioned herself to ensure that she is not only painting full time, but is also available to discuss her work with collectors and artists. Christie has worked as a full time painter, specializing in oils, since 2008 and her influence amongst her contemporaries continues to grow in tandem with the number of people who count themselves amongst her collectors.
