Clun Castle, Shropshire Built in the 11th century to establish Norman dominance. After William the Conqueror, he gifted lands to his followers to secure and settles the Welsh/English border (as the countries are termed now). It was originally constructed in timber and was reconstructed in stone in the 13th century.

Clun castle is the epitome of a romantic ruin. Located high on a hill in the midst of a beautiful, small, picture-postcard village, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and sweeping hills. The ruins themselves are reasonably substantial, particularly the tower with some smaller remnants nearby. The castle is surrounded by a lovely open field. The nearby car park and public toilets with a small bridge across the river just adds to the beauty and convenience. Just be warned that access is not suitable for wheelchairs and the approach to the hilltop is quite steep. But if in the area, this is a must visit.
Beautiful area for walking, taking the dog.You can park in village car park, there is a toilet. This is by the river, there are picnic tables too, you walk over the ornate bridge into the fields walking to Clun Castle which is in ruins. It is good therapy.
Great free castle ruins to visit. Short walk from the town bridge across the river, many little paths to find to get to the castle area, easy walk up the mound on a thin path with great views from the hill. A really nice little hidden gem.
A great free place to visit. Stunning views from the top.
