On April 20, 2020 I was helping my 27-year-old son – whose hours had been severely curtailed during the pandemic -- try to get enrolled into health insurance via MNsure through their COVID-19 special open enrollment period. I quickly discovered that the MNsure website is poorly designed, the processes described on the site are confusing, and (especially during the current pandemic) it is very difficult to talk to a human being for assistance. I got about halfway through the enrollment process and could not figure out how to proceed further (my phone line connection with a MNsure person dropped and, even though she had my number, she did not call me back). I then looked into MNsure’s lists of navigators and brokers and picked out Crosstown Insurance. I spoke with a woman named Krista who immediately took down all the details of my story and said that, as a MNsure-recognized broker, she could work the back channel and get me some answers. She called me back in less than an hour and explained exactly how to proceed and what followup I would expect from Hennepin County (since my son would now be under Medical Assistance through the county rather than MNSure). She warned me not to expect a speedy response but, in fact, I received the paperwork from the county 3 days later and, moreover, what was described in these materials squared with what Krista had said. The fact that she provided real-time, accurate advice to a complete, cold call stranger on the phone – and didn’t earn a dime during the transaction -- is a great tribute to the customer-service ethic Crosstown Insurance and their employees.
