The conditions were perfect! We saw many flowering Desert Lily’s as well as other blooms and caterpillars. We couldn’t have planned it better for driving by after a winter of rain.

We'll, it is a Sanctuary after all -- not a botanical garden. Simply a preserved area in the Mojave Desert where the desert Lily can reliably be found WHEN conditions are right. Through the efforts of a husband and wife team back in 1957 the BLM fenced 2000 acres to protect this rare plant. The signage is old but readable. The parking lot is semi-level and relatively free from brush. 150 Yards off the highway, at the back of the parking area is a 3 strand barbed wire fence with a narrow walk-through entrance to prevent cows, and wheeled vehicles from entering. Conditions weren't ight\ for the Lily to appear, but we did get to take a walk amidst emerging desert flowers brought about by recent rains. No trails, trash recepticles, benches,or stairs -- just a delicate aroma from the blossoms, and a moment of solitude before heading a few miles further south to join the I-10.
We went there today April 6th and saw not one single lily. However after leaving the sanctuary, heading back towards the 10 on the 177 on the opposite side from the sanctuary, ie the west side, starting about a half a mile south of the sanctuary, we saw an abundance of lilies, many of them flowering, right next to the road! There is a fence along that side as you leave the sanctuary but where we began to see the flowers there was no fence, so we stopped the car and we're able to go right up to them.
Blooming right at the beginning of Spring. Cool and clear air. Best to take it slow along the dirt road access to BLM viewing.
Beautiful Day in the desert; many lily in bloom.
