Devil's Bridge over the River Lune, south east of Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria, UK, believed to have been built by the monks of St Mary’s Abbey, York circa 1365. Local legend attests the construction of the bridge to be the work of ‘The Devil’ which was a Medieval god-fearing attribution common to anything of unknown date or provenance. The bridge has three, almost semi-circular arches each made up of four ribs, plainly demarcated in the soffits. The external curve of each arch is stepped for visual emphasis. The bridge was eventually closed to all vehicular traffic in 1932 and is now a walking only footbridge and Scheduled Ancient Monument.
