When I was training as a furniture maker/designer I was lucky enough to go to a yoga class at my school. I remember trying to do a head stand and finding it impossible!!! Latter when I set up my own business as a maker I soon discovered that longs hours at a work bench leaning over to cut joints etc, plays havoc on your back, so naturally I started thinking about going to a yoga class and at that time it seemed it would be a cure-all for all my physical problems --- the mental, emotion and spiritual stuff didn't really surface. 36 years latter and with training from a number of wonderful yoga teachers, plus my own self study of Tibetan Buddhism and opportunities to listen to Tibetan and European teachers from that tradition. Yoga now seems to me to be a journey into the mind, using the vehicle of the body to bring an awareness to emotions and the pain of their knee jerk responses, thereby improving self awareness. At my present level of understanding the breath appears to be the interface between the internal and external worlds, the effect of which brings calmness and develops an ability to reflect on interactions between self and others with the ultimate aim of course of becoming at one with self and others. How to do this in day to day life is our practical challenge. So what I am trying to say is that the physical practice of yoga requires an appreciation of how our mind affects our practice and therefore our life and our relationships with others.
