YVONNE DUBOURDIEU - VISUAL ARTIST As a contemporary expressionist painter working mostly in mixed and traditional media, Yvonne is interested in exploring the expressive power of colour and line. Many of her paintings are landscapes, somewhat abstract, with a number of them harking back to memories of her Scottish roots. She draws inspiration for her figurative work from memory, photographs and her imagination. Often using elements of the representational as well as the abstract with the intent of retaining some truth or essence of the subject, she creates emotive pieces that explore our relationship to nature, our domestic realities and our place in the world. Yvonne is influenced by artists that use the expressive language of colour and line. From Cezanne, Manet, Matisse; the Scottish colourists Ferguson, Cadell, Peploe; the neo-experssionists, Georg Baselitz, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Edinburgh artist John Bellany, thru to contemporary artists like William Kentridge, Marlene Dumas and Peter Doig. Yvonne was born in Stirlingshire, Scotland and mover to Edmonton in her early 30's. A documentary filmmaker for most of her life she now splits her time behind the camera and in the studio focused on her visual art practice. Her films have aired nationally on television and screened at film festivals across North America. Many of her films have art, artists and disability art as a central subject. Her portrait photography and visual artwork have shown at the Stollery Gallery, UofA Extension Gallery and Harcourt House Artist Run Centre. Yvonne studied photography at the Glasgow College of Building and Printing and recently graduated from the Fine Art Certificate program at the University of Alberta with distinction.
