Recently I visited another lock station for my project to visit all the lock stations on the Rideau Canal, using my motorbike as transportation. This trip took me to Newboro, lock #36. This is the 14th lock station that I have visited so far as I work my way south to the Kingston Mills Locks. The Newborn Lock wouldn’t be one of my favourites. I don’t think it is as picturesque as others that I have visited, and it is quite busy with boat and car traffic. There is a large marina next door with a large parking lot in a high tourist area near Westport. As a result there were quite a few people, cars and boats there. All is not bad though — there are some really interesting features and history around this lock. First, it has the highest elevation of any lock in the Rideau Canal system. This means that it is down river from the Newboro Lock, whether you go to Ottawa or Kingston. This lock joins the Cataraqui and Rideau Rivers so that water flows downhill in both directions. Another interesting thing about this lock is that it is one of three mechanized locks on the Rideau Canal system. The other two are the Smith Falls Combined Lock and the Black Rapids lock. The canal used to be managed by Transport Canada and they started a program of lock modernization in 1966. In 1972, the lock system was transferred to Parks Canada and a decision was made to end the modernization so that the history of the lock system could better be recognized.

Really neat place to take a stroll by the water and watch the locks work! Great for bringing kids to show them how these canal systems work. They have facilities available on site as well as picnic tables and ample of parking.
Beautiful place to stop, even when the locks are closed for the year.
Easy access from the canal from a canoe. The grounds are very well kept and it is within a very short walk to the restaurants and stores in Newboro.
Been going to this area since 1957. Try Stirling Lodge in Newboro or The Opinicon in Chaffeys Locks.
Beautiful place with all the necessary amenities.
Busy lock, busy lake but it sure looks nice. There’s bbqs for use so bring yr charcoal and brisket it’s going to be a hot summer!
