Vitas team continually told me my mother was in the final stages of Alzheimer’s dementia, when I told them that I was positive she had a very bad infection and this was causing delirium. They completely ignored me and refused to treat a treatable infection, they refused to even diagnose it with a simple urine test . Fast forward; My mother had a urinary blockage and a very bad UTI which was causing her to go septic and put her in almost kidney failure. I had to fire VITAS, get my mom into the emergency room where they saved her life. My mother suffered for almost 9 days, progressing each day that I talk to no less than five different nurses and doctors working for VITAS. Federal code states that hospice must treat treatable infections. It’s draconian and barbaric not to treat an infection and just push morphine and Ativan on my mom. I refuse to give my mother morphine and they continually pushed me to give it to her- Had I given it to her she would be dead. I guess this was the whole point right? My mother is now much better thank God and thank God that I didn’t listen to them. Be careful if you choose this company. Below from Hospice Patient Alliance The last moments, hours, days and even months a patient has to live, however long they may be, are precious to both the patient and the family. Taking that precious time, that life, away unnecessarily and sometimes intentionally, is a violation of the standards of care and the trust placed by the patient in the hospice professionals. A decision to deny treatment for a treatable infection must be recognized for what it is: a decision to impose death prematurely upon the patient who otherwise would live longer, even though suffering from a terminal illness.

*****FIND A DIFFERENT PROVIDER***** My experience with hospice is 4 months with a different provider and Vitas is far worse then I have experienced. I don't have high expectations since they are looking after a relatively immobile person. However, their communication amongst themselves and with the patients families is HORRIBLE. My 10 year olds have better empathy and expectation setting than our Vitas team. They send us unneeded meds, none of the forms we filled out during admission were communicated to the rest of the team and they don't respond with urgency or care so we repeat the same information on every call & visit for the first 2 weeks of our experience. Whatever system or process they use for communication is horrible and causes stress for the family and the patient. *****FIND A DIFFERENT PROVIDER*****

Never Have I ever met such a compassionate and honest caring healthcare. I worked privately for a patient and she was placed in vitas hospice. They provided all that she needed and gave her full attention beyond what any facility or hospital ever gave her. Never did her or myself feel rushed, ignored , discerned or waved when we or anyone in her family had questions. I could name all the incredible nurses like Lora , Rafael , Wilson, Eddy, Zoreh, Rosie, Sara, Roxana, both of the Cassandra and all those Ive forgotten their names but none the less who showed their kindness and honest concern for her. But each and every one we spoke to on the phone or visited with her or even delivered equipment were beyond kind. This company has far beyond exceeded my expectations and has given everyone who has seen or heard how this patient is cared for a new and posotive look on what truly hospice care is and how it should be. Thank You Vitas for being the amazing people you are and going above and beyond what healthcare is.
