The ICRT was established in 2012 as a Community Interest Company to harness and build upon the unique therapeutic practice, training and research carried out by the Northern Ireland Centre for Trauma and Transformation [NICTT] following the Omagh bombing of August 1998. Through its research and experience in Northern Ireland the ICRT believe that wars, conflicts and disasters impact adversly on the mental health of combatants and civilian populations, leaving behind needs that are beyond the capacity of indigenous pre-conflict mental health services to address. Psychological and mental health needs of victims and survivors present an important context for the task of peace building and for the engagement and inclusion of civic society following conflict and disasters, and are also necessary to help address the legacy of trans-generational impacts of trauma on children and families. ICRT staff now work with statutory and voluntary organisations to develop solutions and analysis in the field of mental health and service development following conflict and natural disasters. Our latest project, WordOnTheGround is a mental health crowd-sourcing platform and support consultancy. The web and mobile platform is designed to assist NGOs and other agencies working in post-disaster, war or conflict zones in assessing the well-being needs of staff – or the communities they serve – and in delivering identified psychosocial responses.
