We visited Herculaneum on an EU Student ticket (18-25 years old) for a total cost of 2 a person, it was a very interesting site, much smaller than Pompeii, but in my opinion much better! We visited at around 4pm at the end of June and we had the place almost to ourselves, with a fairly late closing time we were able take our time strolling around the site, not queueing behind American tourists to see into each room/house!

Herculaneum is definitely worth a visit if you are in the Naples/Sorrento area. Although the site is quite small compared to Pompeii, it is worth spending about half a day here to see everything. It is amazing how well many parts have survived over the years. There are many pieces of artwork on the walls and in mosaics that can still be easily identified. There is plenty of history here to look at. If you can, it is worth getting a guide or picking up an information book from the entrance. Trains to Herculaneum are direct and relatively frequent from Naples and Sorrento. There is a walk of a few hundred meters from the station. Student discounts are accepted for those under a certain age. For this discount, you will need to present government ID. They accepted my UK driving license, but not an ISIC/NUS card. I would recommend visiting both Herculaneum and Pompeii. Both of them are roman ruins, but each of them are also unique.

You need a couple of hours to see it all. The audio guide is useful (bring your headphones).
